Club Safer Recruitment Policy

Introduction

This policy reflects our commitment to creating a safe and positive environment for all children and young people involved in our club. Our aim is to ensure that every volunteer working with us shares our values and dedication to safeguarding the welfare of our young players. This policy follows the best practise guidance as set in here: RFU-Safeguarding-Children-Policy-2022.

For the purposes of this policy volunteers are defined as those doing any ‘Regulated Activity’ with children (*1) . This applies, non-exhaustively to all coaches, team mangers, tour organisers, first aiders & referees.

The Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO) is Bruce Wilson: vrfc.safeguarding@icloud.com | 07983 151 542

Initial Meeting

Upon expressing interest in becoming a volunteer at Verulamians RFC, all potential candidates will be required to attend a brief introductory meeting with the Club Safeguarding Officer (CSO). This meeting is designed to provide an overview of the club's safeguarding policies and procedures and to outline the ‘next steps’ below.

DBS Check

All new volunteers are required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check within the first two weeks of joining the club. This check is crucial to ensure that all individuals working with children are suitable and have no history of behaviour that could put our young players at risk.

Application Form, Interview & References

Prospective volunteers will be asked to fill in a standard RFU Application Form (*2) and then participate in an interview with the Club Safeguarding Officer and either the Minis or Juniors Chair, depending on the age group they will be working with. This interview will assess the candidate's suitability for the role and their understanding of safeguarding practices. All new volunteers should provide a character reference. This reference will help to verify the volunteer's background and suitability for working with children.

Probation Period

New volunteers will undergo a probation period of three months. During this time, the Head Coach of the relevant age group will monitor the volunteer's performance, and any concerns with respect to child welfare, will be directed to the Club Safeguarding Officer. This period allows us to ensure that the volunteer is a good fit for our club and is dedicated to maintaining a safe environment for our players.

Conclusion

At Verulamians RFC, the safety and well-being of our young players is our top priority. By adhering to this Safer Recruitment Policy, we aim to build a team of dedicated and trustworthy volunteers who will contribute to the positive development of our children through the sport of rugby.
