News From The Chair.....Feb '26

“Game on!”

After a start to the new year which has seen 55 days of consecutive rain, touch wood, the 2nd half of the season feels like it is now finally getting under way.

All expected fixtures have taken place over the last few weeks including a tight Senior 1st XV win vs Letchworth, and a 2nd XV win vs Royston that saw Vees open the points gap by 100 points.

The Junior Herts Cup competitions have also yielded some good results with the U14s and U15s both through to the semis of their respective competitions and the U16s through to final in theirs.

Club events are also up and running in 2026 with the 6 nations being shown at the club each weekend. After a week’s rest, the international teams were back with a superb result for Scotland and a not quite as enjoyable one for England fans. This weekend, the club house will be open from 1pm on Saturday, as one of 3 nations look to take the 6 Nations title. Please come down and support the club. To make things interesting, come down dressed as something to represent one of the 6 Nations (but keep it family friendly please!)  A big thanks to the volunteers from the club who have manned the bar on those weekend where we didn’t have senior games on.

Also this weekend, our annual quiz night will be held on Friday from 7pm. Get your tickets and come down to help raise funds for our new social space and have a great time whilst doing so.

It would also be remiss of me to not mention the charity work at the end of last year. As always, Mazzie B did a fantastic job organising the annual Christmas Raffle, and a huge thank you to Ross Graham for organising the Annual Interclub Charity Match which raised over £1600.

The club continues to be in good health, and as always, the committee and a number of volunteers continuously work to improve the provisions at the club and maintain the facilities. A number of annual checks are taking place at present but we are always looking for skills within the club membership to help make these processes smoother and easier, and hopefully support each other in our club community!

To that end, next season, there will be a number of opportunities for new volunteers. The two priorities at present are a Mini’s Chair person and a Minis Fixture Secretary. The latter, in particular, is an urgent requirement in order to organise the mini’s games for next year. Thank you to Rob Young who has fulfilled this role over the last few years, who is moving up as his son moves into the Junior section.

I would also like to extend our thanks to Arlette, our long-standing lead bar person, who has stepped down from the role. She has been of fantastic service to the club in a good number of different areas for over 20 years, She will carry on doing other tasks that she has done week to week to keep the club ready for members and hires use.

All the best for the rest of the season, and fingers crossed for better weather as we head into Spring.

Regards

Ian ‘Shanks’ Graham
